DAVIC European Information Day
"This is DAVIC"
Geneva, 12 January 1999
DAVIC has a vision of an audio-visual world where producers of multimedia content can reach the widest possible audience, where users are protected from obsolescence and have seamless access to information and communication, where carriers can offer effective transport, and manufacturers can provide hardware and software to support the unrestricted production, flow and use of information.
DAVIC is a non-profit Association based in Switzerland, with a membership of over 175 companies from more than 25 countries. It represents all sectors of the audio-visual industry : both manufacturing (computer, consumer electronics and telecommunications equipment) and service (broadcasting, telecommunications and CATV), as well as a number of government agencies and research organisations.
It was conceived 5 years ago to meet a keen global requirement for a full system design in support of interactive multimedia services based upon MPEG. A requirement still exists, and the urgency is as strong as ever, but DAVIC has moved with the market from the early Video on Demand trials over a range of access technologies to closed multimedia retrieval systems, from satellite broadcast with ISDN/PSTN return to open set-top boxes giving access to the Internet, from integration with home networks and systems of mass local storage to a full review of the evolutionary possibilities of IP-based systems to deliver managed quality services.
The aim of DAVIC remains unchanged - to promote the success of interactive digital audio-visual applications and services by promulgating Specifications of open interfaces and protocols that maximise interoperability, not only across geographical boundaries but also across diverse applications, services and industries.
The Specifications which can be found at www.davic.org have grown in comprehensiveness and with backwards compatibility through the version DAVIC 1.3.1, which is currently under consideration by ISO/IEC for adoption as a fully supported international Specification, to DAVIC 1.4 which was released at the 22nd meeting in June 1998. A fresh design is underway towards DAVIC 1.5 for IP-based systems, in which context the previous work is now regarded as "the DAVIC Intranet". Market vision is contained in the DAVIC concepts of TV Anytime and TV Anywhere.
This Seminar on 12 January 1999, which programme is appended, will describe this new push to deliver an industry standard which is sought world-wide for the benefits of end-to-end interoperability of broadcast and interactive digital audio-visual information, and of multimedia communication. It features many of DAVICs most senior experts in systems design, APIs, content coding and metadata, and security. It provides a unique opportunity to understand both the relevance of DAVICs legacy and the value of its commitment to serve the immediate needs of our industry.
