The Digital Audio-Visual Council(DAVIC) held its 14th meeting in Geneva, Switzerland from the 2nd to the 6th of September, hosted by Telecom PTT and ITU. About 250 experts in the field of multimedia gathered together from all over the world. These experts from more than 200 companies and organizations represent most of the major players in this field.

DAVIC recently published the specifications, DAVIC 1.0, unique in that it is the first end-to-end, full scale, global specification for emerging digital audio-visual services. These specifications have the goal of promoting broadband digital services using a variety of delivery media such as optical fiber, cable or satellite, by ensuring compatibility and interoperability on a world-wide basis. This will be advantageous to all parties - equipment manufacturers, network operators, content producers, service providers and most importantly consumers.

DAVIC is pleased to announce that the implementation of DAVIC 1.0 for actual service has already started in the U.S.A. DAVIC is helping the emerging industry of digital audio-video to adopt universal standards in order that these services can be shared around the world. This announcement when combined with the previous announcement of plans for adoption of DAVIC standards by various organizations in Europe and Asia reaffirm the widespread commitment to such global audio-visual networks.

At their Geneva meeting, DAVIC released its second set of specifications DAVIC 1.1, which extends the existing specifications. These specifications add new functions, tools, and technologies such as:

Internet access,

Virtual machine, JAVA to support downloaded software, and

Microwave broadcast services (MMDS, LMDS).

They have also created and issued baseline DAVIC 1.2 specifications for public comment. These additions to the DAVIC specifications which will be published at the end of this year incorporate the latest developments in multimedia technologies such as:

Security of content and communications

HDTV quality audio and video,

Ehanced Internet access

By using these specifications, industry can develop multimedia systems which are capable of seamless handling of numerous high quality, digital audio-visual services as well as current and emerging Internet services.

The interoperable products which comply DAVIC 1.0 specification will be exhibited at the coming Tokyo Electronics Show during October 1st to 5th period.

Jules A. Bellisio, the president of DAVIC said, "The agreement to finalize specifications for Internet and microwave broadcast services represent important steps in the ongoing efforts of DAVIC to generate a common set of global specification for many types of multimedia services."

Also during the meeting, Hiroshi Yasuda was elected as the next president.

DAVIC will conduct its next meeting in Hongkong in December this year, where the DAVIC 1.2 specifications will be released.
