What does DAVIC stand for ?

DAVIC stands for Digital Audio Visual Council

Why did DAVIC stopped operations?

DAVIC was created in August 1994 with an expected duration of 5 years. Its task was to create complete sets of specifications using emerging digital audio-visual technologies. The term of 5 years was reached in August 1999 and the set of specification (DAVIC1.3.1) had become an International Standard and International Report (IS 16500 and IR 16501) after the resolution of comments performed in June 1999. Therefore, the decision has been taken to stop operations and to transfer the development of further activities, initiated as a logical follow-on of DAVIC works to a new forum (or new fora).

What was the legal status of DAVIC?

DAVIC was a non-profit Association established in Switzerland according to the Swiss Civil Code and registered at the Chamber of Commerce of Geneva.

Why in Switzerland?

DAVIC's scope is international with no bias towards any country or region in the world, hence the choice of Switzerland as the traditional neutral site, along with IEC (International Electrotechnical Commission), ISO (International Organisation for Standardisation) and ITU (International Telecommunications Union).

What was the DAVIC "constituency"?

DAVIC intends to be the home for all those who see the potential of digital technologies applied to audio and video. As such there is no "constituency" because the range of industries represented in DAVIC covers content, service and manufacturing companies.
