Introduction to DAVIC

The purpose of DAVIC is to favour the success of emerging digital audio-visual applications and services, by the timely availability of internationally agreed specifications of open interfaces and protocols that maximise interoperability across countries and applications/services.

The primary instrument is production of technical specifications that maximise interoperability across countries and applications/services.

The methodology for initiating new work items and developing specifications is described in the DAVIC Procedures for Technical Work.

DAVIC specifications are issued in versions: DAVIC 1.0, DAVIC 1.1, DAVIC 1.2, DAVIC 1.3, DAVIC 1.4, DAVIC1.5 etc. The current DAVIC 1.0 version of specifications allows the deployment of systems that support initial applications such as TV distribution, near video on demand, video on demand and some basic forms of teleshopping. Each future version will extend on previous versions to provide more functionalities while keeping, as far as possible, backwards compatibility with previous versions.

Membership in DAVIC is open to any corporation and individual firm, partnership, governmental body or international organisation and does not restrict Membership on the basis of race, colour, sex, religion or national origin. Associate Member status is usually chosen by those entities, mostly government organisations, who do want to be members of the Council without taking an active role in the precise technical content of the specifications.

By joining DAVIC each Member declares himself individually and collectively committed to open competition in the development of digital audio-visual products, technology and services.
The Members are not restricted in any way from designing, developing, marketing and/or procuring digital audio-visual hardware, software, systems, technology or services. Members are not bound to implement or use specific digital audio-visual standards, recommendations and DAVIC specifications by virtue of their participation in DAVIC.

DAVIC intends to make the results of the activities available to all interested parties on reasonable terms applied uniformly and openly and to contribute the results of its activities to appropriate formal standards bodies.

DAVIC follows the established IEC/ISO/ITU policy concerning Intellectual Property Rights (IPR) matters. In case an IPR item is required for implementing a part of the DAVIC specification, the owner of the relevant IPR has to declare his availability to either give free use of the patented items, or licence on fair and reasonable terms and on a non-discriminatory basis.
